How to Prepare Your Home for Summer

Summer is upon us and now is the time to get your house ready for the season, both inside and out. We’ve put together some tips to ensure your home will look amazing and keep you comfortable through the hottest months of the year!

Inside Your Home

Inspecting your home’s equipment to make sure everything is running properly is always a good idea, whether you do it yourself or you hire a contractor. Here’s a list of everything you should check on the inside of your home:

  • Make sure your air conditioning system has a new filter and it wouldn’t hurt to have a professional clean and inspect it to make sure it’s in working order

  • Clean the exhaust vents in every bathroom

  • Clean out washer hoses and dryer vents

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • Clean ceiling fan blades and reverse the direction. Your fan’s direction should be counterclockwise during the summer so that the cool air stays low in the room

  • Check your attic or crawlspaces for animals and have a professional extract the animal if needed

Outside Your Home

Summer brings on entertaining family and friends, so it’s also important to make sure the outside of your house is well taken care of. Here’s a few things you can do to maintain the exterior of your home:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts to prepare for summer showers

  • Check to see if your irrigation system works properly and that there are no leaks or loose sprinkler heads

  • Check all outdoor play equipment for animals or nests

  • Inspect caulking around all doors and windows to ensure you keep insects and weather out of your home

  • Add mulch around trees and shrubs to keep moisture around the roots

  • Clean and organize garage, especially if that’s where you keep your lawn equipment

  • Check oil and gas levels in the lawn mower and weed trimmer

  • Wash the exterior of your house, including windows and screens

  • Clean your patio and all lawn furniture

  • Clean and degrease any grills you have, and check all the connections and propane levels if you have a gas grill
